about

Aussie musos – originally from Scotland – giving a Scottish Christmas tradition a new twist.
Steve Boyd and “Oor Wullie” both hail from Dundee with the latter being the more famous Dundonian unless you’re a fan on Melbourne’s music scene. Oor Wullie and all the characters reeled off in the song could be find gracing the pages of an annual known as the Broons annual which was a common Christmas present for children in Scotland between the 60s and the 80s.
In muso critic language … this is part dub reggae, part film noir soundtrack with latin undertones using the metaphor of Oor Wullie’s innocent, idealic Scotland whilst struggling to cope with the dystopian reality of middle-age.
Like most countries and cultures, the Scots have traditions - The Broons Annual - that hark back to a simpler time “before divorce, addiction, depression.”

lyrics

Jings!
Crivvens!
Help ma boab
- it’s oor Wullie (You can read it in the Sunday Post)
Jings!
Crivvens!
Who’s Wullie? A’body’s Wullie!
Tossing and turning in ma bed, dreaming of days long gone
Paw in his pipe and slippers, Maw with her pinny on
Pet moose Jeemy tickles my feet, PC Murdoch’s on the prowl
A take ma catapult from ma dungarees: off wi’ his helmet, on wi’ the scowl
Jings! …
The sky is black the moon is bright, the Hogmanay bells strike
A steam train whistles at the station, ha’e a sherry if you like
Grandpaw Broon on his concertina, shortbread and Dundee cake is fare
Standing at the door wi’ a lump of coal
Singing Auld Lang Syne, underpants upon head
Every Christmas an annual, Oor Wullie or the Broons
We didnae ha’e nae money, just lots of stories and lots of tunes
Sittin’ on his bucket, reminding me of ma’self
Before divorces, depression, addiction, blissfully ignorant, innocent health
Jings! …
Fat Boab ......Soapy Joe.....AKA Souter....Wee Eck
Basher McKenzie.....Primrose Paterson... Bonnie Doris Gow
